Anthony Davis could return this season with the Wizards
Contrary to recent speculation, Anthony Davis could finally take the court in a Washington Wizards jersey before the end of the 2025-2026 season. General manager Will Dawkins clarified the situation regarding his new star during a press conference on Sunday.
A return timeline taking shape after the All-Star break
Dawkins’ statements come after a report from The Athletic suggested a probable definitive shutdown for the 32-year-old big man for the rest of the season. « The plan for AD right now is that he will finish his rehab in Dallas. During the All-Star break, he will make another visit to the doctor. It’s an important appointment that will allow us to see where he is in his progression, » explained the Wizards executive.
Davis, acquired as part of an eight-player trade with Dallas last Thursday, has been suffering from a sprained finger on his non-shooting hand since January 8. The initial recovery time was estimated at six weeks, which would place a potential return between late February and early March.
Washington’s optimism also extends to Trae Young, the other star recruit who arrived from Atlanta in January. Dealing with a knee injury, the four-time All-Star point guard is progressing favorably according to Dawkins: « He continues to work on the court. He started doing one-on-zero drills, and he’s been involved in a bit more two-on-two action. He’s moving in the right direction. »
A promising partnership for the Wizards’ future
Despite their difficult position in the standings (14 wins and 37 losses), the Wizards can afford to take their time with their new recruits. The franchise is banking on the explosive potential of the Young-Davis duo moving forward. « Trae has probably never played with a player of Anthony Davis’ caliber, » notes Dawkins, highlighting the possibilities offered by this partnership in the pick-and-roll.

Davis is averaging solid numbers this season with 20.1 points and 11.1 rebounds in 20 games, proving he remains productive when healthy. His return, even if late, would allow the Wizards to test their new core alongside young talents like Alex Sarr and Tre Johnson.
The situation should therefore become clearer in the coming weeks, with hopes of finally seeing the Young-Davis partnership in action before the end of the season.
