After their success against Hungary earlier in the day, France fought a fierce battle against a young German team ranked 6th in the FIBA rankings, one place behind France. A battle that ended with a French victory, thanks to an incredible game-winning shot from Alex Vialaret.

A balanced start turns chaotic

Alex Vialaret opens the scoring with the first French basket, but Germany responds immediately. Fouls quickly accumulate on both sides – 5 for Germany, 4 for France – after just 3 minutes of play. The Germans temporarily take the lead 9-8, challenging the French who struggle to develop their game against much tougher opponents than the Hungarians.

With 4 minutes remaining, the score is perfectly balanced at 10-10. Both teams, physically exhausted, see the level of play deteriorate with increasing individual errors and fouls. Germany’s 10th foul gives France a 3-point lead (16-13) with just over two minutes remaining.

A crazy finish with Alex Vialaret as hero

Hugo Suhard proves decisive in crucial moments, shining on both ends of the court to keep France ahead. Emmanuel Monceau also contributes with an important free throw to bring the French score to 18 points, but Germany refuses to give up and comes back to tie 19-19.

In this finish where any basket could be decisive, France misses an opportunity and commits a technical foul. Germany takes advantage to lead 20-19 with possession. Fortunately for Karim Souchu’s men, their opponents also lack clarity and miss a manageable mid-range shot.

The ball then returns to Alex Vialaret’s hands, well defended but inspired. As he told the Danish announcer after the game: « I didn’t think, I just shot and hoped it would go in, and there you go ». His 2-point shot finds the bottom of the net and gives France a breathtaking 21-20 victory.

This second consecutive victory allows France to finish top of Group B and gain precious confidence for the rest of this 3×3 European Cup. They will start the final phases this Sunday at 13:15 Copenhagen time against Lithuania.
