A turnaround for ASVEL in EuroLeague?
Arthur Puybertier

The future of ASVEL continues to raise questions, but major news has just changed everything. In a highly significant statement, Le Progrès reports that the club president, Tony Parker, is « announced as the future coach of ASVEL« . Journalist Luc Paganon, who has been on the ground for decades, likely has information allowing him to publish this brief passage.
This prospect comes at a particular time for the Villeurbanne club. While ASVEL‘s financial situation is reportedly improving, uncertainty remains regarding the leadership’s strategic choice between NBA Europe and EuroLeague. The NBA‘s European league remains « the absolute priority » of president Tony Parker, but ASVEL doesn’t want to close any doors.
The club has also asked EuroLeague not to exclude it from its plans for the coming years. This dual role of president-coach would represent an unprecedented challenge for Parker, who would have to juggle between managerial and technical responsibilities.
Before potentially taking the reins at ASVEL, Tony Parker will get his first coaching experience this summer. The former San Antonio Spurs point guard will lead France’s U17 team at the World Cup in Turkey, from June 27 to July 5. This international experience will be a real-world test for someone who is completing his DES this year, the diploma that will allow him to coach in Betclic ELITE next season.
Meanwhile, Pierric Poupet’s work at ASVEL has been recognized since he succeeded Gianmarco Pozzecco during the 2023-2024 season. However, the Norman coach’s contract expires on June 30. And according to our sources, no possibility of a potential extension has been presented to him so far… As if a successor has already been found.
