Absent from the courts since February 20 due to a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, Victor Wembanyama (7’4″, 21 years old) was seen training in Costa Rica. The Spurs star, vacationing in the Central American country, was photographed during an individual workout session with a basketball in hand.

Victor Wembanyama back… on the court

The Costa Rican Instagram account basket506 shared the first encouraging images on Wednesday, April 23 of Victor Wembanyama working out in a local gym. A discreet but highly symbolic appearance for the young French center of the San Antonio Spurs, who hasn’t played a game since February 20.

The reason? A rare deep vein thrombosis diagnosed in his right shoulder, which required anticoagulation treatment, surgery in late March, and a long rest period. This injury kept him out of NBA competition for the remainder of the season, preventing him from competing for the Defensive Player of the Year award.

« I’m following medical guidelines »

On April 13, at the end of the regular season, Victor Wembanyama stated in a press conference: « I can do physical exercise, lift weights, and also play basketball, but it’s very controlled and light. Even though sometimes I’d like to do more. I’m following medical guidelines, » he said, remaining cautious and measured.

The medical staff’s main goal remains complete recovery. For now, the young prodigy is avoiding any rush: « I’m neither ahead nor behind on the return protocol, » he specified.

Uncertainties about EuroBasket

Regarding possible participation in EuroBasket 2025 (August 27 – September 15), caution remains the watchword. « I don’t know if it’s realistic, there are many uncertainties. Making projections wouldn’t be relevant at all, » he had declared. For now, Wembanyama continues to progress step by step, at the pace his recovery requires. While enjoying a country he particularly appreciates.
