Victor Wembanyama is making his MVP case impossible to ignore. The San Antonio Spurs center delivered another spectacular performance Wednesday night, recording 41 points and 18 rebounds in a dominant 127-113 road victory over the injury-depleted Golden State Warriors.
The French phenom wasted no time establishing his dominance, scoring 10 of his team’s first 14 points just 3:36 into the game as San Antonio jumped to a commanding 17-3 lead. Wembanyama finished an efficient 16 for 22 from the field while adding three blocks, marking his fourth 40-point performance of the season.
Chasing greatness with unwavering determination
Following his latest masterpiece, Wembanyama made his MVP ambitions crystal clear in an interview with ESPN‘s Scott Van Pelt. « I do care deeply about it, » Wembanyama stated. « I think that of the greats that are in the Hall of Fame — or the best of all time — they have fought and grabbed everything they could grab early on in their career. If I want to make my spot among the greats, I got to try to not miss any occasion to put my name up there. »
.@wemby is now just the third player in Spurs history to have 40+ points in back to back games!

The numbers support his lofty aspirations. During the Spurs’ current 10-game winning streak, Wembanyama has averaged 27.9 points and 12.3 rebounds. His recent rebounding surge is particularly historic, as he’s recorded five straight games with at least 15 rebounds – the longest streak by a Spurs player since Dennis Rodman in 1995, surpassing career-best four-game streaks by Tim Duncan and David Robinson.
« Wow, » Wembanyama said of the statistic. « I watched a lot of highlights [of Rodman], mostly on the Bulls than anything else. They don’t make them like [him] anymore. »
The Spurs have been nearly unstoppable, winning 26 of their past 28 games and improving to 58-18. This remarkable run has them breathing down the neck of the Oklahoma City Thunder (60-16) for the top seed in the Western Conference, with San Antonio holding the crucial tiebreaker thanks to a 4-1 head-to-head record.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr witnessed Wembanyama’s evolution firsthand and couldn’t help but marvel at the transformation. « He’s got unbelievable confidence now, » Kerr said. « He looks like he knows exactly what to do on both ends. His first couple years, he looked young at times. He doesn’t look young anymore. He just looks like he knows exactly what he’s doing. Dominated the glass. There’s plays you can’t do anything. Several lobs where it looked like a Nerf hoop. He’s brilliant. »
While the MVP race remains competitive with defending winner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading Oklahoma City’s own impressive 15-1 run over their past 16 games, Wembanyama appears destined for individual hardware. Even if the MVP trophy eludes him, he’s considered a lock for his first Defensive Player of the Year award, with Kerr calling him « obviously the best defensive player in the league. »
