The Black Mamba: How Michael Jordan’s Fear of Snakes Gave Birth to Kobe Bryant’s Alter Ego

The untold story reveals how a marketing campaign initially designed for Michael Jordan in 2003 became Kobe Bryant's legendary identity, all because of His Airness's snake phobia.

A Campaign Born from Revolutionary Material

In late 2002, at Nike’s Oregon headquarters, executives examined a futuristic material called Tech Flex. This black, tubular technology, used in automotive and aerospace industries, was set to revolutionize the Air Jordan 19 by creating basketball’s first laceless shoe.

Gentry Humphrey, a Nike executive, observed this braided material and immediately thought: « This looks like a snake. » That night, he searched online for « the most dangerous black snake » and discovered the black mamba. Fast, agile, feared—exactly like Michael Jordan on the court.

Nike’s marketing team and the Wieden+Kennedy agency then developed a complete campaign around this concept. Visuals were created with a real black snake (importing an actual black mamba to the United States was impossible), and everything seemed perfect to accompany the Jordan 19 launch in spring 2004.

The Secret Phobia That Changed Everything

But during the presentation to Michael Jordan in spring 2003, Gentry Humphrey immediately noticed a problem: « You could see from the start he wasn’t comfortable. » Jackie Thomas, marketing director for Jordan Brand, then presented the complete campaign to MJ, thinking she had successfully convinced him.

The next day, Larry Miller, president of Jordan Brand, revealed the truth: « MJ doesn’t like snakes. » This phobia was one of Jordan’s best-kept secrets, who would even change the TV channel when a snake appeared on screen.

After negotiation, Jordan accepted a compromise: a single ad would appear in ESPN The Magazine in March 2004, with the slogan « Only Greatness Equals Greatness, » then the campaign would be abandoned. The subsequent promotion of the Jordan 19 would feature Carmelo Anthony, Gary Payton and Jason Kidd, with no snake references.

The Rebirth with Kobe Bryant

The story takes an extraordinary turn in 2004. Exactly one year after Jordan’s last game, Quentin Tarantino’s « Kill Bill Vol. 2 » is released. Kobe Bryant, then in legal turmoil following the Colorado case, watches the film during a sleepless night. The scene where Elle Driver’s character presents a black mamba fascinates him.

« I watched that—yeah, that’s me. That’s me! » Bryant declared in a 2018 interview. He then created his Black Mamba alter ego to survive this difficult period: « I had to separate myself from myself, because going through that period, it was like so many things were happening at the same time. »

Bryant’s first public appearance with a snake occurred in 2006 on the cover of SLAM Magazine. Then Nike progressively developed the campaign: the Zoom Kobe III in 2007, the « Venom » edition in 2008, and the Zoom Kobe VI with snakeskin texture in 2010.

Ironically, according to several close sources, Kobe Bryant never knew that the Black Mamba concept had initially been designed for his idol Michael Jordan. The strict separation between Jordan Brand and Nike explains this lack of knowledge. Today, Nike continues to honor Bryant’s legacy by declaring 2025 the « Year of the Mamba, » with a complete new collection.
