A pioneer who revolutionized franchise history
Nancy Leonard played a major role in the history of the Pacers, far beyond her status as a coach’s wife. Between 1976 and 1980, she served as assistant general manager. While her husband coached the team, she managed administrative aspects. She guided the delicate transition from the ABA to the NBA in 1976.
Her most memorable moment remains the 1977 telethon, organized with Sandy Knapp, then head of public relations. At the time, the financial situation was critical and the franchise’s survival was at stake. Nancy had an unprecedented idea: launch a telethon to sell season tickets. Thanks to this innovative initiative, the Pacers avoided bankruptcy.
« We are deeply saddened to learn of Nancy Leonard’s passing. Without her, we simply wouldn’t be here today, » said the Simon family, current team owners. « From the franchise’s early days, Nancy devoted herself entirely to the team, not only as Slick Leonard’s wife but as a pioneer who united the community when we needed it most. »
A legacy recognized by current players
Until age 93, Nancy Leonard never missed a game. She was still present during the Pacers‘ run to the NBA Finals in 2025. Her loyalty and energy touched several generations.
« Before every game, I could count on a wink and a smile, » Tyrese Haliburton shared on social media. « There would be no Pacers without Nancy Leonard. I can’t wait to see the day her name is in the rafters, where it belongs. Rest in peace, legend and beautiful soul. »
Nancy Leonard now joins her husband Bobby, who passed away in April 2021 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. Together, they shaped the identity of the Indiana Pacers for decades, leaving a legacy that extends far beyond sports.
