Shai Gilgeous-Alexander breaks Wilt Chamberlain’s historic road record

The Thunder star continues to write NBA history. During Oklahoma City’s 100-87 victory against Dallas, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 30 points on 12/20 shooting, marking his 59th consecutive road game with at least 20 points. This performance allows him to surpass Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary record, which dated back to the 1961-1962 season.
Despite a difficult three-point shooting night for his team (8/39), the Canadian once again carried his team with remarkable efficiency. His coach Mark Daigneault was quick to praise this exceptional consistency: « He’s obviously an excellent road player. There’s really no difference in his game, whether he’s at home or on the road. That’s a certain level that some players reach: this ability to perform consistently in all environments. »
A second Chamberlain record in sight
This historic performance is only the first step in an even more ambitious quest. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has also just recorded his 123rd consecutive game with at least 20 points, across all venues. He is dangerously close to Wilt Chamberlain’s absolute record, set at 126 consecutive games in the 1960s.
The story of this record is particularly interesting: after scoring 17 points in the last game of the 1960-1961 season, Chamberlain strung together 80 perfect games the following season, then 46 more before being stopped by… an ejection for two technical fouls after just four minutes of play on January 20, 1963.
Initially expected to be broken around February 20, this record will have to wait due to the abdominal injury that kept « SGA » off the courts for several weeks. If he maintains this offensive momentum without another injury, the Thunder player could claim this historic record on March 9 when hosting the Nuggets.
This exceptional season confirms the reigning MVP status of Gilgeous-Alexander, who is averaging 31.9 points, 6.5 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game with a career-high shooting percentage of 55.0%. The Thunder, the defending champions, sit atop the Western Conference with a record of 47 wins and 15 losses.
