The Cleveland Cavaliers have just announced Sam Merrill’s extension for the next four seasons. The 29-year-old American guard has signed a $38 million contract, averaging nearly $10 million per year, which represents a fourfold increase from his current salary.
This signing comes just hours after the arrival of Lonzo Ball from Chicago, traded for Isaac Okoro. The Cavaliers continue to restructure their roster by retaining one of their most reliable shooters.
A Pure Shooter to Strengthen the Cavaliers’ Bench
Sam Merrill has established himself as a key piece in Cleveland’s offensive system thanks to his exceptional 3-point shooting. This season, he maintained a 37.2% success rate from long range on 5.2 attempts per game, after exceeding 40% during the 2023-2024 campaign. Over his entire career, he boasts an impressive 39% success rate from beyond the arc.
The 60th pick in the 2020 Draft played a record 71 games last season, averaging 7.2 points in 20 minutes of play. His versatility allows him to play positions 1, 2, and 3, providing valuable tactical options for the coach.
An Atypical Journey Crowned with Success
Before joining Cleveland in March 2023 via a 10-day contract quickly converted into a multi-year deal, Sam Merrill had an unconventional path. Having played for Milwaukee and Memphis, he notably won the NBA title with the Bucks in 2021, just one year after being selected last in the first round.
This extension solidifies the Cavaliers’ backcourt rotation around Darius Garland, Lonzo Ball, and Merrill, while Ty Jerome’s departure in free agency seems to be confirmed. Cleveland is betting on this continuity to maintain its status as a reference team for 3-point shooting in the NBA.
