When Yuki Kawamura gave up baseball for basketball in elementary school, it wasn't out of a calling but out of fascination with uniforms he spotted in a sports store. This anecdote perfectly sums up the atypical journey of this 5'7" point guard who defies every convention of the modern game.
Born into a family of educators in Yanai City, Kawamura grew up idolizing Yuki Togashi, another Japanese star of small stature. That inspiration led him to unexpected heights: two consecutive national titles at Fukuoka Daiichi High School, then a brief stint at Tokai University before joining the Yokohama B-Corsairs in March 2022. At 18, he became the youngest player in B.League history to score points, already signaling his ability to push past limitations.
His basketball IQ, speed, and unshakeable confidence quickly caught attention across the Atlantic. In 2024, Memphis offered him an Exhibit 10 contract that was quickly converted into a two-way contract, making him the shortest player in the NBA and one of the few under 5'11" in league history. At the Paris Olympics, he made a major statement against France with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, becoming only the third player in history to achieve that stat line in an Olympic game.
