Player Profile

When Taran Armstrong recorded the first triple-double in California Baptist history, he did more than put up impressive stats: he confirmed what observers had sensed since his early days in the North West Basketball Union of Tasmania. This 6'7" point guard, born in Burnie in 2002, possesses that rare court vision that turns ordinary possessions into works of art.

Inspired by his father and uncle, Armstrong discovered basketball at age five in Tasmanian gyms. But it was in 2018, through an NBA Global Academy scholarship at Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence, that his trajectory accelerated. The young prodigy left Canberra for the United States, where he joined his brother Tre with the California Baptist Lancers. This brotherly chemistry on the court became one of the most compelling aspects of his college journey.

His versatility is impressive: able to play multiple positions, Armstrong combines tactical intelligence with natural instinct. His 25-point average at the 2020 Under 20 National Championships, where Tasmania claimed bronze, speaks to his decisive impact in crucial moments.

His return to Australia with the Cairns Taipans marked a new chapter. Despite foot, calf, and ankle injuries that might have derailed other players, Armstrong persevered with a determination that earned the admiration of coaches and analysts alike. That resilience paid off: in February 2025, the Golden State Warriors offered him a two-way contract, the ultimate recognition of his exceptional potential.
