Player Profile

When Oscar Tshiebwe traded his cleats for basketball shoes in 2014, few could have imagined that a kid from Lubumbashi would become one of the most respected centers in American college basketball. This late switch, motivated by his exceptional height, marked the beginning of a meteoric rise from the hills of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the courts of the NCAA.

Bismack Biyombo's influence proved decisive in this transformation. At a camp organized by the NBA star, the young Congolese player impressed enough to earn a heavyweight mentor. Intense training sessions on the terrain of his hometown forged his physical resilience, a quality that would stay with him throughout his career.

His move to the United States in 2015 opened a new chapter. Between Mountain Mission School in Virginia and Kennedy Catholic High School in Pennsylvania, Tshiebwe collected state titles and earned the prestigious Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year award. His participation in the McDonald's All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit confirmed his status as a top prospect.

His deep Christian faith accompanies him at every step, which he expresses publicly with gratitude. After stints at West Virginia and then Kentucky, where he established himself as a dominant force under the boards, the center experienced the ups and downs of the 2023 NBA Draft. Going undrafted, he bounced back with determination, signing successively with the Indiana Pacers and then the Utah Jazz, while also playing for the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League.

This unconventional journey, from Congolese football to American professional courts, reflects a remarkable perseverance that continues to define his basketball career.
