Player Profile

At 16, Mouhamed Gueye had never played a single organized basketball game. Yet this young Senegalese player from Dakar would go on to complete one of the most remarkable journeys in modern basketball, moving from the soccer fields of his neighborhood to American college courts in just a few years.

Growing up in a family of four children with deep basketball roots — his cousins played for the Senegalese national team and professionally in Europe — Gueye long preferred soccer. It was his mother's encouragement and the inspiration of his older brother that eventually steered him toward basketball at age 16, a turning point in his life.

The transition was drastic: leaving Dakar to join the Prolific Prep Academy in Napa, California, with no organized basketball experience whatsoever was a bold gamble. But under the guidance of coach Philippe Doherty and his personal trainer Mamadou Cisse, the youngest of the Gueye siblings showed an exceptional ability to adapt. His meteoric rise earned him four-star recruit status, ranked among the top 50 high school players in the country.

At Washington State with the Cougars, his talent and versatility fully blossomed, proving that basketball can transcend borders and late starts. His journey perfectly illustrates how determination and adaptability can turn a dream into a tangible reality.

Today, Gueye embodies the bridge between Africa and the NBA, naturally becoming a role model for African youth who dream of following in his footsteps to the highest levels of world basketball.
