Player Profile
When Maxwell Lewis temporarily stepped away from organized basketball after a negative experience with a coach, few could have imagined he would one day become an NBA draft pick. Born in Las Vegas in 2002, the young forward found refuge in music, learning the saxophone during that forced break — a detail that reveals the depth of his personality.
His father Robert, who had moved to Las Vegas for work, introduced him to basketball through youth leagues. But it was a well-timed growth spurt that brought Maxwell back to the court, where he made his mark in the National Junior Basketball League. This sporting renaissance was built on solid foundations: first at Somerset Academy Losee, which he had originally chosen for its music program, then at Mojave High School and AZ Compass Prep.
His unconventional journey led him to the innovative Chameleon BX NBA prep program before he joined Pepperdine University. There, his two seasons confirmed his potential: an All-Freshman distinction in the WCC and a spot on the All-WCC Second Team. Those performances convinced the Denver Nuggets to select him 40th overall in the 2023 draft, before he was immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Standing 6'7" with a remarkable wingspan, Lewis possesses the offensive versatility that modern basketball demands. After splitting time between the Lakers and their G League affiliate South Bay, he joined Brooklyn in 2024, wearing number 27. This singular path, shaped as much by music as by sport, makes him a truly unique profile in the league.
