Player Profile
At 5'8", Markquis Nowell has defied every stereotype of modern basketball since he first stepped onto college courts. This point guard, born in New York on Christmas Day 1999, turned what many considered a handicap into his greatest strength.
His high school journey perfectly illustrates his determination: after playing under legendary coach Bob Hurley Sr. at St. Anthony High School, Nowell transferred to Bishop Loughlin Memorial and then The Patrick School, averaging 19.9 points and 8.1 assists per game as a junior despite dealing with injuries. Yet, no Division I university initially gave him a chance.
Little Rock eventually opened its doors to him, where he shone for three seasons before joining Kansas State in 2021. It was there that Nowell revealed his true caliber, establishing himself as one of the most formidable point guards in college basketball. His creativity as a passer and tenacious defense more than made up for his modest height.
The 2023 NCAA Tournament stands as the pinnacle of his college career: despite playing through injury, he led the Wildcats with exemplary leadership and memorable clutch performances. This selfless dedication earned him national recognition and iconic status among all underestimated players.
Undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft, Nowell signed a two-way contract with Toronto before joining the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G League. His journey proves that in basketball, the size of one's heart can make up for the size of one's body, and that the greatest obstacles can sometimes become the most powerful springboards.
