Player Profile

When Malevy Leons stepped onto the Paycom Center court on November 1, 2024 for his first NBA appearance, few observers could have imagined the unique journey that had brought him to the Oklahoma City Thunder. This 6'9" giant with extraordinarily long arms (7'1" wingspan) embodies one of the most singular careers in modern Dutch basketball.

Trained at the Apollo Amsterdam academy, Leons discovered professional basketball as early as 2017 in the Dutch league. But it was his bold move to the United States in 2020 that transformed his career. He headed to Missouri and Mineral Area College, where the power forward immediately showcased his exceptional defensive skills. A perfect undefeated season and national recognition at the junior college level set the tone.

His transfer to Bradley University revealed a truly elite defender. Over three seasons in the Missouri Valley Conference, Leons achieved the rare feat of recording at least 50 blocks and 50 steals per season — a dual standard reached only by the most elite defenders. This defensive versatility, combined with his unusual mobility for his size, attracted the attention of NBA scouts despite his undrafted status.

The Thunder bet on this unique profile, integrating Leons into their player development system through their G League affiliate. His first NBA minutes — one point, one assist, and one rebound in three minutes — marked the culmination of a remarkable journey from the Netherlands. At 25, this versatile defender continues to write a story that could inspire an entire generation of European basketball players.
