Player Profile
In a small Virginia town where American football reigns supreme, a young boy turns every daily activity into a fierce competition. Matthew "Mac" McClung discovers basketball before his fifth birthday and quickly develops a hunger for winning that would define his entire career.
Encouraged by his mother and inspired by his sister Anna, also a high-level athlete, McClung gives up football to dedicate himself entirely to basketball. This decision proves visionary: at Gate City High School, he shatters all records by becoming the all-time leading scorer in Virginia High School League history with 2,801 points, while leading his team to its first state championship.
His acrobatic dunks and spectacular plays go viral online, thrusting this small-town prodigy into the national spotlight. After notable stints at Georgetown and then Texas Tech, where he earned BIG EAST Player of the Week honors twice, McClung faces the reality of the 2021 NBA Draft: no team selects him.
Far from being discouraged, the guard channels that disappointment into fuel. He shines in the NBA G League, winning the 2021-22 Rookie of the Year award and then the 2024 MVP. Meanwhile, his stints with the Lakers, Bulls, and 76ers open the doors to the NBA in 2022.
McClung permanently etches his name in history by becoming the only player to win three consecutive NBA Dunk Contests (2023, 2024, 2025), joining an exclusive club with only three total victories. This exceptional journey, from undrafted player to high-flying phenomenon, inspires an entire generation and proves that determination can overcome any obstacle.
