Player Profile
When Kenneth Lofton Jr. scored 40 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in his first NBA start on April 9, 2023, he made history as the first player to accomplish such a feat right out of the gate. This outstanding performance with Memphis perfectly captures the unique journey of this power forward born in Port Arthur, Texas.
Coming from a family of athletes — his grandfather Gene "Rock" Duhon is in the Southern University Athletics Hall of Fame, and his sister Kennedi played college basketball — Lofton Jr. had to reinvent his game after a growth spurt that moved him from point guard to power forward in high school. That adjustment paid off: he won the 5A State Championship with Memorial High School and earned a McDonald's All-American nomination.
At Louisiana Tech, he established himself as a versatile big man before shining on the international stage. At the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, his 16 points in the final — including 15 crucial points in the second half — helped Team USA come back against France to claim the gold. That ability to raise his game in decisive moments would become his trademark.
Undrafted in 2022, Lofton Jr. forced his way into the NBA through sheer determination, playing successively for Memphis, Philadelphia, and Utah. The son of U.S. Army veteran Kenneth Sr., he draws on that family legacy for the resilience needed to meet professional challenges. Now with the Shanghai Sharks in the CBA, he continues to refine a unique game that blends point guard vision with big man power.
