Player Profile

In the unforgiving world of the NBA, few stories resonate as strongly as that of Justin Champagnie, a forward who transformed the challenge of going undrafted into a springboard for professional success. Born in Staten Island and raised in Brooklyn, the young man of Jamaican descent grew up in a family where athletic excellence ran in the blood — his father Ranford having won the national college football championship with St. John's in 1996.

After shining at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School with a 19.8-point scoring average in his senior year, Champagnie continued his rise at the University of Pittsburgh. There, he made Panthers history by becoming the first player since DeJuan Blair in 2009 to earn First Team All-ACC honors as early as his sophomore season, cementing his status as an exceptional talent.

But it may be his unique brotherly bond that makes his journey truly special. Alongside his twin brother Julian, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs, they form one of the rare pairs of twins to face each other on NBA courts. This friendly family rivalry has fueled their mutual determination to excel at the highest level.

Overlooked in the draft, Champagnie turned that disappointment into motivation. His time with the Toronto Raptors allowed him to benefit from the invaluable mentorship of Pascal Siakam, whom he considers an older brother. That relationship shaped his understanding of the game and his professional maturity.

In March 2024, his perseverance was rewarded with a four-year, $10 million contract with the Washington Wizards. This signing marks the culmination of an exemplary journey, proving that talent and determination will always ultimately overcome early obstacles.
