Trained at United Faith Christian Academy in his hometown, the December 11, 1998 native joined the UNC Wilmington Seahawks, drawn by his relationship with assistant coach Doug Esleeck. It was there that he truly broke out during his final two college seasons, posting performances that caught the attention of NBA scouts.

Despite a notable showing with the Toronto Raptors during the 2022 Summer League, Sims had to take the G League route to fulfill his NBA dream. Signed by his beloved franchise, the Charlotte Hornets, he quickly became the go-to offensive option for the Greensboro Swarm, even setting the all-time scoring record for the affiliate franchise.

Between ten-day contracts and successive call-ups since September 2022, Sims made the most of every opportunity given to him by the Hornets organization. His consistency and professionalism earned him growing trust, culminating in his permanent roster spot in April 2025. For this son of Charlotte, every NBA game represents the fulfillment of a journey where determination always came before labels.
