When all the other recruits in his class left the University of Washington following a coaching change, Jaylen Nowell made the bold choice to stay behind on his own. That daring decision by a young man from Seattle would prove to pay off in the most remarkable way.

The son of two former college basketball players from Clark Atlanta University, Nowell already had basketball in his blood when he was shining at Garfield High School in his hometown. But it was at Washington that he truly blossomed, turning his loyalty into excellence. His sophomore season in 2018-2019 will go down in the record books: averages of 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, crowned by the Pac-12 Player of the Year award.

Consistency was his trademark: 30 games with more than ten points across the 34 contests of that memorable season. That reliability opened the doors to the NBA, where the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him 43rd overall in the 2019 draft. His professional debut on November 6, 2019 marked the beginning of a journeyman career that took him from the Timberwolves to the Memphis Grizzlies, through the Detroit Pistons and several G League teams.

Far from being discouraged by the challenges of constant adaptation, Nowell has turned his resilience into a strength. His journey recently brought him all the way to China, where he now plays for the Shanxi Loongs. This ability to bounce back and adapt to different levels of play speaks to the same determination that once led him to remain loyal to the Huskies when everything seemed to be pushing him toward the exit.
