Player Profile

When injuries threaten to shatter a dream, some players find the strength to reinvent themselves. Jarred Vanderbilt embodies that resilience that turns obstacles into stepping stones.

Coming from a family where basketball runs in the blood — both his parents, Gwendolyn and Robert, played at the college level — Vanderbilt grew up surrounded by orange balls. At Victory Prep Academy, he impressed with rare versatility, averaging 28.5 points, 13.4 rebounds, and 8.8 assists per game in his senior year. That exceptional performance earned him a McDonald's All-American selection and a spot among the top prospects of the 2017 class.

But the University of Kentucky turned into a trial by fire. Injuries limited him to just 14 games, threatening to derail his professional future. Yet even physically diminished, he led the Wildcats in rebounding whenever he could play, already revealing his ability to impact the game without necessarily scoring.

Selected 41st overall by Orlando and immediately traded to Denver, Vanderbilt embarked on a nomadic NBA journey that took him from Denver to Minnesota, then to Utah before landing with the Lakers. It was in Los Angeles that he finally found his place, with his defensive skills and versatility fully blossoming. The California franchise recognized his value by offering him a four-year, $48 million contract in September 2023.

A champion of the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament in December 2023, Vanderbilt has transformed his college scars into mental strength. His ability to rebound — literally and figuratively — makes him a key piece of the Lakers' championship ambitions.
