Player Profile

When Jalen Slawson scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Virginia in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, he wrote one of the most memorable chapters in Furman University history. That performance perfectly captures the journey of a player who turned patience into his greatest strength.

The son of Tom Slawson, a former college basketball player at The Citadel, Jalen grew up immersed in the game in South Carolina. After starring at Pinewood Preparatory School, where he earned Area Player of the Year honors, he joined Furman as a reserve before working his way into the starting lineup. His defensive versatility and ability to contribute across the stat sheet made him a valuable piece of the Paladins' system.

The COVID-19 pandemic granted him a fifth year of college eligibility, which he made the most of. In 2023, he led Furman to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 43 years, capping five seasons of steady growth. His standout performance against the Virginia Cavaliers put his name on NBA radars.

Selected 54th overall by Sacramento in the 2023 NBA Draft, Slawson became the last player born in the 1990s to be drafted. After twelve NBA appearances with the Kings on a two-way contract, he continued his professional development with the Orlando Magic and Osceola Magic in the G League. His story is one of perseverance — a competitor who turned every step of his journey into a springboard for the next.
