At 5'8", Jacob Gilyard defies every stereotype of modern basketball. This point guard from Kansas City has turned what could have been a handicap into his greatest strength, becoming a defensive legend despite his height.
Trained at The Barstow School under former NBA player Billy Thomas, Gilyard quickly showed that looks can be deceiving. As a sophomore in high school, he led his team to the Missouri Class 3 state title, before exploding onto the scene with a school-record 50 points as a senior. That performance earned him the prestigious DiRenna Award, honoring the best high school player in Kansas City.
Despite these achievements, major universities remained deaf to his calls. Gilyard then joined Richmond in 2017, where he would rewrite the history of college basketball. Over five seasons, this steal wizard accumulated 466 steals, setting an unmatched NCAA record. His ability to read the game and anticipate opponents' passes captivated national observers.
Undrafted in the 2022 draft, Gilyard refused to give up on his NBA dream. After a stint in the G League, he accomplished the unthinkable on April 9, 2023: becoming one of the rare players under 5'9" to set foot on an NBA court in the modern era, wearing the Memphis Grizzlies jersey.
Now in Germany with Niners Chemnitz in the BBL, Gilyard continues to prove that determination can transcend physical limitations. His journey inspires a generation of "too small" players who refuse to accept hasty verdicts.
