When Jack McVeigh pulls on the number 58 jersey for the Houston Rockets, he writes an unprecedented page in NBA history while carrying the dream of an entire island on his shoulders. For before becoming the first player to wear this iconic number — the sum of his previous jersey numbers — the Australian forward was first the architect of the Tasmania JackJumpers' first championship title.
Starting out from Cabarita Beach and heading to the university courts of Nebraska, McVeigh built his character in the shadows, excelling in the sixth-man role for the Cornhuskers. Back in Australia, he initially moved between Gold Coast, North Adelaide and Adelaide, quietly honing his skills before the opportunity of a lifetime: joining a Tasmanian franchise in search of an identity.
The 2023-24 season revealed the true McVeigh. His 27-point playoff performance crystallized a spectacular rise, crowned by a historic NBL title and the Finals MVP trophy. That consecration propelled the Murwillumbah native to new heights: selection for the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, then the Paris 2024 Olympic Games wearing the green and gold.
His brief stint in Germany with MLP Academics Heidelberg was merely a stepping stone toward the ultimate goal. Today, with his two-way contract between Houston and Rio Grande Valley, McVeigh embodies this new generation of Australians conquering the NBA through perseverance rather than early brilliance.
