Player Profile
What would Harry Giles have become without the injuries that plagued his career? This question has haunted American basketball ever since the 6'11" big man was considered the top high school prospect in his 2016 class. Gifted with rare versatility for his size, Giles possessed ball-handling skills and athleticism that made him the prototype of the modern center.
His journey perfectly illustrates the unpredictability of elite sports. After shining with Chris Paul's Team CP3 in AAU and winning gold with the USA junior national teams, multiple knee injuries began to slow his rise as early as high school. His time at Duke in 2016-17 was limited to 26 games with modest statistics (3.9 points, 3.8 rebounds), a direct consequence of his lengthy rehabilitation.
Selected 20th overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by Portland and immediately traded to Sacramento, Giles spent three seasons with the Kings trying to recapture his former level. Nicknamed a "redshirt rookie" due to his injury-delayed debut, he was never able to fully express his potential in the NBA, cycling through stints with Portland, Brooklyn, and the Lakers.
Recently active with the Shanxi Loongs in China and in the G League, Giles embodies one of the greatest "what ifs" in modern basketball. His exceptional technical skills for a player of his size continue to fuel hope for a return to the spotlight, making him a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
