Player Profile
When Enrique Freeman steps onto an NBA court today, few would guess that just a few years ago, no university wanted him. Born in Cleveland to Puerto Rican parents, this future power forward walked on at the University of Akron in 2018 as a regular scholarship student, forced to try his luck as a walk-on with the basketball team.
Fate has a strange way of expressing itself: after his first year at college, Freeman grew four inches, a physical transformation that completely changed his athletic trajectory. This unexpected growth spurt, combined with relentless hard work, earned him an athletic scholarship and a starting spot on the team.
Initially recognized for his defensive skills, Freeman gradually shaped his offensive game until he became one of the most formidable power forwards in the country. His final college season will go down in history: by tying the NCAA single-season record for double-doubles (31), he joined legends such as David Robinson in the annals of college basketball.
At Akron, Freeman became far more than a star player. His journey from anonymous walk-on to record-holder inspired an entire community. In June 2024, the Indiana Pacers selected him 50th overall in the NBA Draft, making him the first Akron player drafted since 1987 and the first in the modern two-round era.
On October 23, 2024, Freeman played his first NBA game in a Pacers uniform, the culmination of a remarkable rise. With a two-way contract allowing him to split time between Indianapolis and the Mad Ants, the Cleveland-born power forward is now writing a new chapter in his unlikely story.
