Player Profile

When E.J. Liddell decided to return to college rather than enter the NBA in 2021, few could have imagined that a torn ACL was waiting for him around the corner. Yet that ordeal only strengthened the resolve of the power forward from Belleville, Illinois, who has always turned setbacks into stepping stones.

From high school, Liddell had shown his ability to excel under pressure. A two-time Illinois Mr. Basketball, he led his Belleville High School-West team to two state championships, impressing coaches with his exceptional footwork and basketball IQ. Those qualities earned him recognition as the top high school player in the state before he chose Ohio State over several prestigious programs.

His three seasons with the Buckeyes confirmed his potential. With 1,298 career points, he climbed to 32nd on the program's all-time scoring list while ranking seventh in blocks with 143 rejections. But beyond the statistics, Liddell demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming mononucleosis and responding with dignity to social media threats following an NCAA Tournament loss.

Selected 41st overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in 2022, a knee injury suffered during the Summer League temporarily derailed his NBA ambitions. Now on a two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls, Liddell is returning to his roots in Illinois, determined to prove that his perseverance and work ethic can overcome any setback.
