Player Profile

When E.J. Harkless recorded the first triple-double in the modern history of Cal State Northridge, few could have imagined that this versatile point guard from San Bernardino would take such a winding road to the NBA. Overlooked in the 2023 draft, the California native refused to give up and turned every step of his journey into a springboard.

His college career already showed that determination: after setting a CSUN record with 54 steals in a single season, Harkless transferred multiple times to sharpen his game. At Oklahoma and then at UNLV, he refined his versatility until he became the undisputed leader of the Rebels in his final year, starting all 32 games and leading the team in every major statistical category.

The transition to professional basketball demanded even more perseverance. From the Ontario Clippers to the Saskatchewan Rattlers in the Canadian league, with stops along the way including the San Diego Clippers, Harkless built up experience without ever losing sight of his ultimate goal. Armed with a degree in urban studies, he continued to polish a playing style that defines his strengths: scoring, rebounding, distributing, and defending with the same intensity.

That all-around approach to basketball eventually paid off. In 2025, the Utah Jazz finally gave him his chance with a two-way contract, allowing him to play between the NBA and the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League. At 25, Harkless proves that the road to the top is not always straight, but that perseverance can turn detours into valuable assets.
