Forced to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, he turned that mandatory pause into a springboard. As an undisputed starter for the Tigers, he led the SEC in steals while excelling in every aspect of the game.

Going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, the Evansville native found a home with the Miami Heat through the Summer League. His profile as a versatile point guard, combining offensive efficiency with defensive intensity, earned him several two-way contracts between the NBA and the G League with the Sioux Falls Skyforce. A brief stint with the Brooklyn Nets in 2023 further confirmed his value on the market.

But it is in the face of injury that Smith has revealed his exceptional character. Two torn ACLs in 2022 and 2023 could have ended his budding career. Each time, the point guard fought his way back with remarkable determination, proving that his tenacity far exceeds his technical skills.
