Player Profile

When Christian James McCollum scored 54 points in a high school game at GlenOak, few could have imagined that this young man from Canton, Ohio, would become one of the most respected shooting guards in the NBA. Yet the path to the top was far from obvious for someone who stood barely 5'2" as a freshman in high school.

A series of growth spurts radically transformed McCollum's trajectory, allowing him to become the all-time leading scorer in his school's history with 1,405 points and earn the Gatorade Ohio Player of the Year award. At Lehigh University, he kept up the momentum by becoming the all-time leading scorer in Patriot League history, but it was above all his stunning upset of Duke in the 2012 NCAA Tournament that thrust him into the national spotlight.

That surprise victory perfectly illustrates McCollum's mindset: never settle for the status quo. A journalism graduate, he even wrote for The Sporting News during his college years to explain his decision to finish his degree rather than enter the NBA Draft early. This thoughtful approach has defined his entire professional career.

Selected 10th overall by Portland in 2013, McCollum quickly formed one of the most formidable backcourt duos in the league alongside Damian Lillard. His natural leadership led him to the presidency of the NBA Players Association in 2021, a testament to the respect of his peers. Now wearing the colors of the Washington Wizards, McCollum continues to embody excellence both on and off the court.
