Player Profile
When Bruno Fernando steps onto European courts, he carries far more than the hopes of Real Madrid on his shoulders. This 26-year-old center embodies the dreams of an entire continent, having become in 2019 the very first Angolan player to compete in the NBA.
His journey began on the streets of Luanda, where his potential burst into the spotlight at the FIBA U-17 World Championship in 2014. That breakthrough opened the doors to the United States in 2015, sending him to the prestigious academies of Montverde and then IMG Academy to sharpen his game. Two standout seasons at the University of Maryland with the Terrapins confirmed his athletic qualities and formidable defensive presence.
But the road to excellence spares no one. In 2020, Fernando endured a devastating personal trial with the passing of his mother, forcing him to miss several games. That tragedy nonetheless forged his determination to honor her memory on the court.
Loyal to his roots, he never abandoned the Angolan jersey despite interest from other nations. After a break, his return to the national team in 2022 electrified supporters from Luanda to Madrid. His signing with Real Madrid in 2025 marks an ambitious new chapter, giving him the EuroLeague stage to prove that Angola can shine at the highest level in Europe.
In the youth academies of his home country, his poster now decorates the walls. Fernando has proven that a dream born in Luanda can conquer the world, paving the way for a generation of Angolan hopefuls.
Honors & Championships
Bruno Fernando made basketball history in Angola by becoming the first player from his country to be drafted and to play in the NBA.
- Selected 34th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, marking a historic milestone for Angolan basketball
- Averaged 10.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game during his first year at Maryland
- Recorded 22 double-doubles during his second college season
- Won the gold medal with Angola at the 2016 FIBA Africa U-18 Championship, averaging 18.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 blocks
- Signed a four-year, $10.9 million contract with the Houston Rockets in 2022
