When Adama Sanogo steps onto American courts, few would guess that less than ten years ago, this Malian center was chasing a soccer ball through the streets of Bamako. In 2014, at just 12 years old, the influence of his uncle Tidiane Dramé, a basketball recruiter, transformed his path: soccer gave way to basketball, and with it, a destiny that would carry him to the heights of American college basketball.

His move to the United States at 13 marked the beginning of a remarkable rise. After honing his game at Our Savior New American School and then at The Patrick School in New Jersey, Sanogo established himself as a four-star prospect, averaging 13.3 points and 10.5 rebounds in his senior year of high school. The New York Rens AAU program gave him additional exposure before his arrival at UConn.

Wearing the Huskies jersey, the big man showed his full resilience. In 2023, he guided his team to the NCAA title while navigating the demands of Ramadan, playing March Madness games while observing the fast. This exceptional performance made him the first player born in Africa since Hakeem Olajuwon to win the Most Outstanding Player trophy at the Final Four.
