Player Profile

When A.J. Lawson went undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft, many would have given up. Not him. The Brampton-born forward turned that disappointment into fuel for a remarkable rise that took him from G League courts all the way to the Toronto Raptors.

His journey reflects an early determination: at GTA Prep in Mississauga, Lawson chose to reclassify his school year to accelerate his basketball development. That bold decision allowed him to join the South Carolina Gamecocks, where he established himself as a respected figure in the SEC between 2018 and 2021.

But it was after college that Lawson's true character emerged. Overlooked by NBA franchises, he shone during the Summer League, earning admiration for his versatility and work ethic. That performance opened the doors to multiple NBA and G League opportunities, proving that talent always finds a way to be recognized.

His adaptability took him well beyond American borders. From the Guelph Nighthawks in the Canadian Elite League to international competition with Canada's U19 national team, Lawson demonstrated his ability to excel in any environment. That diverse experience shaped a complete player, capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.

Today, with his two-way contract with the Raptors, Lawson perfectly embodies the spirit of perseverance. Splitting time between Toronto and the Raptors 905, he continues to refine his game, turning every obstacle into a learning opportunity. His journey proves that in basketball, the draft is only a starting point, never a final destination.
