Victor Wembanyama made his return to the court count in spectacular fashion. After missing Game 3 due to concussion protocol, the San Antonio Spurs star dominated both ends of the floor in a historic 114-93 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda Center. The win gives San Antonio a commanding 3-1 lead in their Western Conference first-round series.
Wembanyama’s stat line told the story of complete dominance: 27 points, 12 rebounds, seven blocks and four steals. His performance made him the first player to record at least 25 points and five blocks in his first career postseason road game since blocks became an official statistic in 1973-1974.
Emotions and frustration fuel dominant display
The young French sensation admitted his emotions played a significant role in his explosive performance. « It’s special, obviously, » Wembanyama said. « I had lots of emotions in me before the game, obviously, excitement, frustration. So, I let it all out today. »
Those emotions stemmed from his delayed return to action. Wembanyama had hoped to play in Friday’s Game 3 after advancing through the NBA‘s concussion protocol, but couldn’t gain final clearance until approximately an hour before Game 4 tipoff. While diplomatic about the situation, his frustration was evident: « The way the situation was handled was very disappointing. Not on the Spurs. But as I say, I won’t get into details. »
Historic comeback rewrites NBA record books
San Antonio’s rally from a 19-point deficit created multiple NBA records. The Spurs became the first team in league history to trail by 15 points or more at halftime and win by 15-plus points. After falling behind by 17 points at intermission, they opened the second half with a 13-0 run, pulling within four points in just 3 minutes and 54 seconds.
The second-half dominance was unprecedented. San Antonio outscored Portland 73-35 after the break, marking the second-largest point differential in playoff history. Wembanyama tied the game at 74-74 with a tip dunk at the third-quarter buzzer, setting the stage for a dominant final period where the Spurs outscored the Trail Blazers 40-19.
Teammate Devin Vassell praised Wembanyama’s two-way impact: « That’s Vic being the best player in the world and we know that he can do that. For him to be able to dominate both ends of the floor doesn’t even really come as a surprise anymore. »
Through three games played in the series, Wembanyama has held Portland to just 5-of-30 shooting when contesting shots, allowing only 10 points while blocking 10 attempts. The Spurs now return home for Game 5 on Tuesday, needing just one more victory to advance to the second round.
