Mikal Bridges extends NBA games played streak to 638 with 23-second appearance in Knicks finale

Consecutive games milestone - The New York Knicks wing played just 23 seconds in Sunday's season finale against Charlotte to maintain his remarkable durability streak, now the eighth longest in NBA history at 638 consecutive games.

Mikal Bridges‘ legendary durability took center stage in the most minimal way possible during Sunday’s season finale. The New York Knicks wing extended his consecutive games played streak to 638 by appearing for exactly 23 seconds in a 110-96 loss to the Charlotte Hornets, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to availability.

With the Eastern Conference’s third seed already secured, Bridges was the only Knicks starter to see action in the meaningless regular season finale. Coach Mike Brown had made it clear before tipoff that the guard would play only long enough to preserve his remarkable streak, with reserve Jordan Clarkson already positioned at the scorer’s table before the opening jump ball.

Strategic preservation of historic streak

The brief cameo unfolded exactly as planned. Bridges committed a foul during the Knicks’ first defensive possession, providing the perfect opportunity to exit the game and protect his health while maintaining his consecutive games record. The orchestrated substitution highlighted the organization’s respect for his achievement.

« I think I just try to pray for good health and do whatever it takes to be healthy and just try to be out there, » Bridges explained his approach to durability. The veteran doesn’t enter seasons with the pressure of playing all 82 games, but simply refuses to miss opportunities to contribute.

Bridges’ 638-game streak now ranks eighth in NBA history, trailing former Knick Harry Gallatin by nearly 50 games. The all-time record belongs to A.C. Green, whose incredible 1,192-game streak spanned 15 seasons and remains untouchable.

« It’s crazy because load management is a real term, » Brown observed before the game. « And that’s something that’s thought of by everybody, not just the medical performance group but by coaches, by individual players, by agents, by family members, and people get pushed to take time off for whatever reason. And so for a guy like that to be at the number he’s at in consecutive games played speaks volumes. »

This marks the second time in four years that Bridges has technically played 83 games in an 82-game season, though the NBA Cup final victory doesn’t count in official statistics. His streak has survived trades and team changes, including his 2022-2023 season split between Phoenix and Brooklyn, where he played four seconds in that year’s finale to preserve the record.
