Kansas’ Darryn Peterson faces mounting concerns over availability issues amid cramping problems

Injury concerns - The star freshman guard has missed 11 of Kansas' 26 games this season due to various health issues, raising questions among NBA scouts about his availability and draft stock ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft.

Kansas Jayhawks guard Darryn Peterson (22) shoots a 3-pointer over Oklahoma State Cowboys guard Vyctorius Miller (5) during a men’s college basketball game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Kansas Jayhawks at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla., Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2026.

Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson’s stellar on-court performances are being overshadowed by persistent availability concerns that have NBA scouts questioning his draft stock. The 6’5″ guard has appeared in just 15 of Kansas’ 26 games this season, missing significant time due to a variety of health issues including hamstring strains, cramping, ankle injuries, and illness.

The latest incident occurred during Kansas’ 81-69 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday, where Peterson scored 23 points but was limited to just the first three minutes of the second half due to cramping. After hitting a 3-pointer, Peterson removed himself from the game and did not return for the final 17:22.

A concerning pattern emerges

« It’s a concern, » Kansas coach Bill Self told reporters after the Oklahoma State game. « I thought we were past it, but obviously we’re not. It’s certainly a concern. » This marked the second time this season Peterson has exited a game early due to cramping, having previously left against BYU on January 31st after scoring 18 points.

ESPN analyst Sean Farnham expressed growing frustration with Peterson’s situation: « It’s baffling, there’s no other way to describe it. It’s not a question of ability; we know what his ability is, we see it. It is availability that continues to be the problem. »

Peterson’s injury timeline this season reads like a medical chart: a persistent hamstring strain from November 11th to December 7th, quadriceps cramping from December 16th to January 3rd, a sprained ankle at Colorado on January 20th, and flu-like symptoms that caused him to miss the crucial game against then-No. 1 Arizona on February 9th.

Draft stock implications

Despite averaging 20.0 points per game on impressive 48.5% field goal shooting and 43.1% from 3-points, Peterson’s availability issues are raising red flags among NBA executives. « I talked to numerous scouts and front office folks in the NBA today who will have picks in the lottery, and they’re starting to say that there are questions, » Farnham revealed.

Danny Parkins of « First Things First » suggested Peterson is receiving poor guidance: « He’s getting terrible advice. He’s making millions of dollars to play basketball… Why do you keep getting cramps? Is there a medical condition? Because what is happening now is, are you load managing? Are you load managing your college career? »

Self acknowledged his team has adapted to Peterson’s unpredictable availability: « One thing about it is [cramping] has happened enough that our guys have learned to play without him, even though that’s not the way we want to play. »
