A terrible tragedy has struck the family of Naz Reid. The Minnesota Timberwolves player learned of the tragic death of his older sister Toraya, 28, who was shot dead Saturday morning in front of a residential complex in Jackson, New Jersey.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer’s statement, police were alerted around 11 AM by neighbors who heard gunshots. They found Toraya Reid unconscious near the exit of the Paragon apartment complex, apparently hit by multiple bullets.
Her partner charged with murder
Law enforcement quickly apprehended Shaquille Green, 29, who was seen running on a nearby road. The suspect, who was in a romantic relationship with the victim according to the prosecutor, was arrested without incident and charged with murder as well as two counts related to illegal firearm possession.
Toraya was the eldest of the Reid children, alongside Naz and their younger sister Jakahya. In 2023, the Timberwolves’ center had highlighted her protective influence over the siblings: « My big sister is very protective. She treats us like she’s our parent. »

The Reid family grew up in Asbury Park, New Jersey, just twenty minutes from where Toraya lost her life. The three children later attended Roselle Catholic High School, where Toraya played softball while her little brother was already destined for a professional basketball career.
Naz Reid, named NBA Sixth Man of the Year for the 2023-2024 season, had recently extended his contract with the Wolves for $125 million over five years. The 25-year-old player has not yet publicly responded to this tragedy that has struck his family as he prepares to begin his seventh season with Minnesota. The NBA community, starting with his former Wolves teammate Karl-Anthony Towns, has sent their thoughts to the player and his family.
Heartbroken. No words can ever take away the pain for my brother. Holding everyone close in prayer today. 🙏❤️
