Moses Moody’s season is over. The Golden State Warriors guard has been diagnosed with a torn left patellar tendon, according to ESPN, ending what was his best career campaign. Surgery is scheduled for Thursday.
The injury occurred in the final minutes of overtime during the Warriors’ 137-131 victory over the Mavericks in Dallas. Moody had just stolen the ball from Cooper Flagg and was heading for an easy dunk to seal the win when his left knee gave out upon landing.
A dramatic injury that silenced the American Airlines Center
The images of the injury immediately raised the worst fears. Moody collapsed under the basket clutching his knee, his kneecap visibly displaced. The arena fell silent for several minutes as medical teams attended to the 23-year-old player.
« I just saw his leg give out, and I saw him collapse to the ground in pain, » said coach Steve Kerr after the game. « We don’t know what it is yet, but it looks really serious. We’re just hoping for the best. »
Moody was carried off on a stretcher under the worried gazes of his teammates. Draymond Green embraced him before he was taken to the locker room. « It’s brutal, you know, we were waiting to get healthy, » Green confided. « Moses is a guy who does everything right… and he changed the game for us tonight. »
The cruel irony of this injury lies in the timing. It was Moody’s return game after missing 10 consecutive games due to a right wrist sprain. He had shined with 23 points in 34 minutes, leading his team offensively in this important victory.
Another major blow for the decimated Warriors
This new injury adds to an already long list for Golden State. Stephen Curry is missing his 23rd consecutive game due to persistent right knee issues, Jimmy Butler has been out since January after an anterior cruciate ligament tear, and Al Horford is also unavailable.
Moody had become one of the few certainties for this struggling Warriors team this season. With career averages of 11.9 points per game and over 40% shooting from 3-point range, he represented the franchise’s future in his fifth NBA season.
Recovery from a patellar tendon rupture typically requires between 9 and 12 months of rehabilitation, which could also compromise the start of next season for Moody, who is playing in the first year of his three-year, $39 million contract extension.
