AS Monaco’s perilous trip to Athens ended in disappointment as they fell to Panathinaikos in their EuroLeague play-in clash. Playing with just eight available players due to the absences of Nikola Mirotic, Nemanja Nedovic, and Terry Tarpey, along with recent departures, Manuchar Markoishvili‘s squad couldn’t match the Greek powerhouse in the boiling atmosphere of Athens’ Telekom Center.
The defensive end proved particularly challenging for Monaco. Panathinaikos‘ formidable starting five of Nunn-Grant-Osman-Hayes Davis–Lessort was difficult to contain, while an old nemesis emerged as the game’s decisive factor. TJ Shorts delivered his best performance of the season across all competitions, scoring 21 points on 9/13 shooting for a 24 efficiency rating, seemingly motivated against his former Paris rival.
Offensive struggles compound Monaco’s woes
Monaco’s offensive execution faltered at crucial moments, managing just 7/25 from 3-point range (28%). Despite numerous open looks that could have compensated for defensive lapses, the Monégasques struggled to find their rhythm. After early 6-0 runs, they never regained the lead throughout the contest.
Turnovers proved costly, with Monaco surrendering 13 possessions. Mike James, despite an otherwise stellar performance with 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists, committed 5 turnovers. Élie Okobo, who had been rested against ASVEL on Sunday, struggled significantly with a 1/7 shooting performance and -5 efficiency rating.
« Congratulations to Ergin Ataman and Panathinaikos, they did what they needed to beat us, they killed us on the offensive glass. 13 turnovers is also too much in these kinds of games. I think we had a chance to win it with open shots, which would have changed the destiny of the game. We fought well, but it wasn’t enough, » expressed coach Manuchar Markoishvili to EuroLeague TV.
The defeat means Monaco must play for European survival in a second play-in game this Friday, April 24th, at home against the winner of the 9-10 play-in between Barcelona and Red Star. This crucial match comes just one day before their French Cup final against MSB at Bercy.
« Regardless of the circumstances, the guys leave their hearts on the court. I have no reason to complain. I’m proud of my team, my organization, these guys are incredible, » appreciated « coach Manu. » Meanwhile, Panathinaikos secured the 7th seed and will face second-seeded Valencia in the first playoff round.
