A modern point guard to build the future
Coming through Cholet’s youth academy, Mathéo Leray played his first minutes in Betclic ÉLITE with CB in 2022-2023. It was then at La Rochelle, in Pro B and back in the first division after a quick promotion, that he established himself as a complete and influential point guard. Last season, he averaged 7.9 points, 6.4 assists (2nd best passer in the league), 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 27 minutes per game. A true floor general, also capable of scoring when needed.
Elric Delord impressed by his profile
Chalon’s coach Elric Delord didn’t hide his satisfaction after Mathéo Leray’s arrival, who chose Élan’s project over more lucrative offers. « He’s a point guard with a bright future ahead of him, with a strong ability to create for himself and the team, » he said. « His understanding of basketball is very high, which will make him my first relay on the court. »
Delord also highlights his boldness and spectacular style, elements that should please the Colisée crowd: « He’s a player with a risk-taking, spectacular game that should appeal to our fans. »
A choice of continuity and ambition for Chalon
With this signing until 2028, Élan Chalon confirms its intention to build a competitive and stable team for the medium term, relying on ambitious and already experienced French players. The arrival of Mathéo Leray, an established leader and rising young player, perfectly illustrates this strategy. He will share the backcourt with Jeremiah Hill (1.88m, 29 years old), who extended along with forward Zac Cuthbertson, and Yohan Choupas (1.93m, 25 years old), who is still under contract.
