Lakers vs Rockets: A Legends’ Duel Between LeBron James and Kevin Durant
LeBron James and Kevin Durant meet again in the playoffs. The Lakers, without Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, face the Rockets in a first-round series where both legends will need to carry their respective teams.

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering the 2026 playoffs in a tough spot. Without their two stars Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, both injured since April 2 against Oklahoma City, they face the Houston Rockets with LeBron James as their sole offensive leader. This series is shaping up as a clash between two legends: James and Kevin Durant.
A Favorable Schedule for the Injured Players’ Return
The NBA has unveiled a particularly spread-out schedule for this first-round series. Game 1 will take place on Saturday, April 18 at the Crypto.com Arena, followed by Game 2 on Tuesday, April 21. The teams will then enjoy two days of rest between Games 2 and 3, before meeting in Houston on April 24 and 26.
This scheduling offers hope for the Lakers. Dončić, who suffered a grade 2 hamstring strain, traveled to Spain to receive specialized injections and is expected to return on Friday. Reaves, dealing with a left oblique injury, was present at practice on Tuesday and participated in shooting sessions. « They are out indefinitely. I won’t have an update for you this week, » said head coach JJ Redick.
A potential Game 5 would take place on April 29, four weeks after their injuries — falling within the typical recovery window for these types of injuries.
LeBron James’ Enormous Challenge at Age 41
At 41, LeBron James must reclaim his role as the undisputed leader. This season, he averaged 29.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 10.4 assists in 36 minutes when Dončić and Reaves were off the court. « I really think we have other options besides just giving him the ball and letting him go against a set defense every possession, » Redick insisted.
Facing him, Kevin Durant (37) arrives in top form after leading Houston to eight consecutive wins at the end of the regular season. The two superstars have faced each other three times in the NBA Finals: James won in 2012 with Miami, and Durant got his revenge in 2017 and 2018 with Golden State.
The Lakers won their regular-season series 2-1, largely thanks to Dončić‘s combined 76 points in the last two matchups in March. But without their primary playmakers, the California team enters as heavy underdogs. Redick identified two keys to winning: « Protecting the ball and securing box-outs — that’s where this series will be decided. If we don’t take care of the ball and we don’t box out, we won’t win the series. »
Houston dominated the rebounding battle 130-91 across their three matchups and boasts a defense ranked sixth in the league. For the Lakers, this series represents the ultimate test: can they extend their season long enough to get their injured stars back?
