The Los Angeles Lakers sent a strong message by traveling to Katowice to attend Slovenia’s first match against Poland. Rob Pelinka, president of basketball operations, and Jeanie Buss, franchise owner, made the trip to show their unwavering support for Luka Doncic during EuroBasket 2025.

This show of confidence comes after the 26-year-old point guard had caused some concern by slightly injuring his knee during a preparation game. Despite this scare, the Lakers maintain their position.

Unwavering support despite the risks

« We have no problem with it, » declared Rob Pelinka regarding Doncic’s participation in EuroBasket. « This is something we believe in for the Lakers organization and its leadership. » This philosophy contrasts with some NBA franchises’ approach, who are more reluctant to let their stars play in FIBA competitions.

The Lakers’ commitment goes even further as they established a partnership with the Slovenian federation, allowing Greg St. Jean, Lakers assistant coach, to join the national team’s technical staff to support Doncic.

« Luka loves to play. It’s his favorite thing in the world, and we wouldn’t do anything to prevent that, » added Pelinka, aware that any opposition to this participation would have created tensions with their franchise player.

For his part, Doncic reaffirmed his attachment to the national team: « It’s an easy choice. I always want to represent my country. Always. No matter what. Obviously, if I’m injured, I won’t play, but if I’m healthy, I’ll always play. »

A strengthened relationship between player and franchise

This European visit also helped strengthen the bonds between Doncic and his executives. Pelinka and Buss had lunch with their point guard and could see his excellent physical condition and motivation for this competition.

« Jeanie and I talked a lot about the mindset he needs to lead the team here. We can see how proud he is to play for his country, » emphasized the Lakers executive.

The impact of this approach goes beyond sports. Doncic invited his executives to discover Slovenia: « We discussed with Luka and he’s really excited to show us his country, go horseback riding with us and have us taste the local cuisine, » revealed Pelinka.

As LeBron James approaches the end of his legendary career, the Lakers are counting on Doncic for their title ambitions in 2025-2026. This supportive approach regarding EuroBasket could prove beneficial in maintaining a harmonious relationship with their new superstar.
