Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals will be remembered for more than just the final score. The home team dominated the Spurs 122-113 on Wednesday night to even the series, and at the center of the storm: Isaiah Hartenstein. The Thunder center delivered a five-star performance, but his methods set social media ablaze and reignited the debate over playoff officiating.
Hartenstein, the « Anti-Wemby Weapon » Who Crosses the Line
After being limited to just 12 minutes in Game 1, Hartenstein played 27 minutes this time and posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, including 8 offensive. His mission was clear: disrupt Victor Wembanyama, who scored 41 points in the opener. The result: the Frenchman was held to 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander heaped praise on his teammate at the post-game press conference. « He has changed our dynamic since his first game with us. He is our physical presence, our backbone. He’s our ‘tough guy’ — the one who sets screens, grabs rebounds, and plays physical, » said the two-time MVP. « And on top of that, he’s very talented: he can pass, play in tight spaces, make the extra pass. »
Isaiah Hartenstein reveals how head coach Mark Daigneault approached him about his role on Victor Wembanyama in Game 2 against the Spurs: « He does a great job communicating before, what your role is going to be. So, I went into Game 1 knowing what it was going to be.

On the court, however, the line between intensity and dirty play was blurred. The big man spent the night pushing, grabbing, and holding Wembanyama, all without the referees calling a foul. He finished the game with only four fouls, leaving more than a few observers scratching their heads.
The Incident on Castle Sparked Outrage
The most controversial moment came early in the fourth quarter, with OKC leading 96-92. After getting posterized by Stephon Castle in the second quarter — a monster play that electrified the arena — Hartenstein appeared to deliberately grab the Texan guard by his hair and yank him to the floor. The referees called nothing, which led to an offensive rebound for the home team and a big three-pointer from Jared McCain.
The Spurs fanbase immediately exploded on social media, calling for a flagrant foul or even an ejection. The question now is whether the NBA can discipline Hartenstein after the fact. The League routinely reviews flagrant fouls following playoff games. But a suspension would further discredit an officiating crew already under heavy criticism — especially since Wemby himself received neither a fine nor a suspension after his elbow on Naz Reid, even though he was ejected during that game, unlike Hartenstein, who calmly finished this one.
Isaiah Hartenstein has been getting away with dirty plays like holding Victor Wembanyama all night, and now he just yanked Stephon Castle by his dreads.
The NBA desperately needs to step in.

At the press conference, the Frenchman deflected when asked about the very physical defense he faced. « You have to absorb all that energy, and it’s no different from the first twelve playoff games, » he replied.
On SGA’s end, a viral exchange also fueled the debate. Asked off the cuff about Hartenstein’s play against the Spurs center, he let slip: « I’m not sure if it was good, to be honest. » He then walked it back at the press conference, clarifying that he had « not really heard » the original question. The series now shifts to San Antonio for Game 3 on Friday night. The referees, for their part, will be under a microscope…
« I’m not sure if was good to be honest. Yeah… It was alright, it was good »
