Germany starts EuroBasket preparation with victory against Luka Doncic’s Slovenia

The German team, reigning world champions, perfectly started their series of friendly matches before EuroBasket 2025 (August 27 to September 14 in Finland and Latvia) by winning 103-89 in Ljubljana against Slovenia. Despite the absence of key players like Dennis Schröder, Daniel Theis and Maodo Lo, the team led by Álex Mumbrú overcame Luka Doncic and his teammates in a fast-paced and sometimes heated game.
Wagner and Krämer shine
In front of a fired-up crowd, Franz Wagner quickly put Germany on the right track with spectacular dunks and a long-range 3-pointer. David Krämer, very accurate from behind the arc, helped extend the lead. Led by Wagner, Isaac Bonga and Justus Hollatz, the Mannschaft took the lead at halftime (53-48), despite foul trouble and what the German side considered frustrating officiating.
The third quarter was decisive: a 27-14 run, capped by Krämer’s half-court buzzer-beater, gave the visitors an 18-point lead (80-62). Christian Anderson, in his first national team appearance, also made his mark with a fastbreak dunk and a three-pointer.

« Always tough against Luka »
Late in the game, Slovenia tried to close the gap with several outside shots, but Germany stayed solid, even reaching 100 points with two minutes remaining. « Our first game… we expected to make more mistakes, but we stuck together, » Isaac Bonga said after the game. « It’s always tough against Luka, we all know what talent he has. »
Franz Wagner focused on the physical nature of this first test: « It was more intense than I expected. We still have a lot to improve, but we showed what we want to do. » The two teams will meet again on Sunday in Mannheim for the rematch.
