Fred VanVleet heading towards extension in Houston after Kevin Durant’s arrival

The Houston Rockets are at a crucial turning point regarding Fred VanVleet’s future. With a June 29 deadline, the Texas franchise must decide whether to exercise the Canadian point guard’s $44.9 million team option for the 2025-26 season, or explore other possibilities.
According to The Athletic, the Rockets would favor the second option, declining the current contract to negotiate a new multi-year deal. This strategy would allow Houston to avoid the luxury tax while retaining a key player in their roster for the long term.
A $100 million three-year contract in the works
The idea of a new contract worth around $100 million over three years is gaining traction in Houston’s front office. This formula would present a dual advantage: keeping VanVleet on the roster while respecting the franchise’s financial constraints.
Despite a mediocre 2024-25 season averaging 14.1 points, 5.6 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals – his least productive statistics since 2018-19 – the 31-year-old veteran remains a valuable asset. His experience and leadership were crucial during the Rockets’ rise, even though their journey ended in the first round of the playoffs.
Coach Ime Udoka wants to retain his floor general, appreciating his ability to organize the offense and his role as a facilitator from the bench. NBA champion in 2019 with Toronto, VanVleet joined Houston in 2023 on a three-year contract, and all signs indicate he wishes to continue his Texas adventure.
The coming days will be decisive for the Canadian point guard’s future, with the Rockets having until June 29 to make a final decision on this major contractual matter.
