The Hamburg Towers have finally tasted victory at home. After a 289-day wait, the German team defeated Ulm 84-82 in a thrilling match at Inselpark Arena, in front of 3,067 spectators. This historic victory also marks the Towers’ very first success against the Swabian side.
Hamburg’s Frenchman, Zacharie Perrin, was productive again with 13 points on 5/6 shooting, 9 rebounds and 3 assists in 29 minutes, facing his compatriots Mohamed Diakite (2 points and 3 rebounds in 4 minutes) and Meissa Faye (did not play), as well as the reigning Pro B MVP, Chris Ledlum (24 points). This confirms Hamburg’s strong last month, finally managing to win games.
Defensive intensity was the key to Hamburg’s success. « Our defensive intensity today was incredible. I would say we saw a completely new Towers team today, » said Ross Williams, who scored 23 points and was the game’s top scorer. « We landed the first blow today. Basketball is a game of runs and today we withstood every surge, we stayed together. »
Coach Benka Barloschky didn’t hide his satisfaction: « A huge weight has been lifted. We came close several times and never managed to tip the result in our favor. And today everything worked, the guys rewarded themselves for their hard work. »
The first quarter set the tone with a hot start by the Towers, led by the return of Osaro Rich who started directly. Zacharie Perrin crowned this start with a spectacular dunk. Despite a brief change in lead, Hamburg maintained the pressure thanks to its solid defense and rebounding dominance, finishing the first quarter tied 22-22.
The second quarter saw Ross Williams catch fire with seven consecutive points, allowing the Towers to open a double-digit lead. Hamburg even managed the feat of keeping Ulm scoreless for 6 minutes and 53 seconds, leading 42-29 at halftime thanks notably to Williams’ fourth 3-pointer.
The game’s finish was thrilling with 15 total lead changes. Kenneth Ogbe emphasized the importance of staying in the present moment: « We always want to stay in the moment and not look too far ahead or behind. Instead, it’s about staying in the moment. This means we can also approach crunch time with confidence. The relief I feel after the game is enormous. »
Ultimately it was Ross Williams who sealed the victory with a decisive 3-pointer for the final 84-82 score, which the Towers’ defense managed to preserve in the final seconds. A victory that could mark a turning point for this team seeking confidence this season.
After starting the season with 18 losses, experiencing a slight improvement in mid-December, Hamburg ends a new five-game losing streak.
