At the start of the season, Draymond Green probably didn’t imagine being the Warriors’ figurehead heading into the playoffs. However, with the long-term injuries to Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry, Golden State’s ship is indeed captained by number 23. Speaking with journalist Anthony Slater from ESPN, he reflected on this de facto role change and his approach to a crucial offseason for his career’s future.
A very disappointing season in the San Francisco Bay Area
The 2024-2025 season had given reasons to hope for the Warriors’ return to prominence. After the deadline and Jimmy Butler’s arrival, they went on a 23-win streak in 31 games. The Curry-Butler partnership showed signs worthy of conference finalists, or even more. Finishing 7th in the regular season, they eliminated the Rockets in the first round to face the Wolves in the second round. However, this momentum was abruptly stopped by Stephen Curry’s injury in Game 1. The chef’s teammates held on in that first game but it wasn’t enough. It would be the only game won by Golden State in that series.
All signs were green heading into this season, the first complete one for Jimmy Butler and Stephen Curry under the same jersey. After an encouraging if not perfect start (25 wins and 19 losses), the former Heat wing suffered a serious injury, victim of a torn ACL at the end of January 2026. For his part, Curry also suffered a knee injury that has kept him off the courts since January 30. These back-to-back announcements have largely called the Warriors’ season into question. They now have a losing record (36 wins to 39 losses) and will have to go through the play-in tournament to hope to qualify for the playoffs.
Draymond Green therefore finds himself alone in command, with a team composed mainly of young players. As Stephen Curry himself points out, this isn’t the ideal situation to exploit the potential of the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year. « I think he would tell you, he’s not going to take an average team and elevate its level. But when it comes to a very good team, he’s going to transform it into a championship team. »
Draymond Green must therefore adapt to a new style of play, always difficult when you’re at the end of your career. Fortunately for the former Michigan State player, his long-time partner should soon return to the court. Sam Amick from The Athletic announced that Steph would return this Sunday, in time to face the Rockets.

An expiring contract and a crucial decision to make
Beyond sports performance, Draymond Green finds himself at a decisive moment in his Warriors adventure. He has a player option worth $27 million next year. Several choices are available to him:
- He can accept this option and become a free agent in summer 2027.
- He can decide not to activate his option. He would then become a free agent on the market.
- He can decide not to activate his option and sign a new contract with the Warriors. This is what he already did in 2023, refusing a $27 million option to sign a new contract at a discount, but long-term.
This last option would indicate good relations between the franchise and the player. It’s the ideal scenario if both sides want Draymond Green to finish his career in California. Stephen Curry was reassuring on this subject: « There has always been and always will be a desire, a goal on our side to represent only one franchise. And I know he [Draymond Green] is still committed to it. »
Nevertheless, the Warriors legend might not decide his future. Indeed, the franchise has already announced that he was on the trade market, particularly to welcome Giannis Antetokounmpo. Green confided about this episode:
« I understand this market better than anyone. I understand that, okay, it’s Giannis Antetokounmpo. They’re not trading me for a bag of chips. That would have almost been an honor. However, I’ll be honest. I didn’t want to play for Milwaukee. »
Draymond Green’s future with the Warriors is therefore uncertain. After 14 seasons in the same jersey, this summer will be a pivotal point in the Green-Warriors relationship. After Klay Thompson‘s departure in 2024, it could be another member of the four-time champion Big Three leaving the Warriors.
