Three days after their publicized altercation, Draymond Green and Steve Kerr have turned the page. The incident that occurred during the 120-97 victory against Orlando Magic on Monday night had gone viral on social media, but the Golden State Warriors quickly defused the situation.
The tense exchange between Green and Kerr erupted in the third quarter during a timeout. After a turnover by Green, the coach had tried to pull him away from a discussion with the referees, sparking an argument that ended with the player heading to the locker room.
« Monday night was not my best moment, and it was a moment where I needed to be calm in the huddle », Kerr stated on Wednesday. « I regret my actions in that exchange. I apologized to him. He apologized to me. We both apologized to the team. »
Green, for his part, explained his decision to leave the bench: « Things were very tense, and that wasn’t going to change. I thought it was better for me to remove myself from the moment, let things cool down. » The veteran described this reaction as « a huge growth moment » for him.
Paradoxically, this incident seems to have energized the Warriors. The team won its next three games, improving its record to 16-15 and regaining positive momentum after difficult weeks. Stephen Curry praised the handling of the situation: « Those two are in a better place. These kinds of things happen. They have the capital of many years of relationship that has had its moments. »
Jimmy Butler, who was present during the altercation, even expressed his appreciation: « It’s not going to be calm all the time. That’s OK. You have two fierce competitors who have won together and want to keep winning. I expect that to happen. »
According to ESPN, Green will not face any additional disciplinary action. General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. spoke with the player after the game to clarify the situation. This quick resolution demonstrates the organization’s maturity and the strength of relationships built over twelve seasons together between Green and Kerr, marked by four NBA titles.
