Lisa Berkani may have had her best game in a Venice jersey with 27 points on 10/22 shooting in 31 minutes, but it wasn’t enough to prevent her team’s defeat against Famila Schio (86-79 OT) in Game 2 of the Italian championship finals. The Venetian club is now with their backs against the wall, trailing 2-0 in wins before a decisive Game 3 at home on Thursday.

Berkani exceptional, but Schio stronger in overtime

Once again, Lisa Berkani took responsibility in a crucial moment. With 13 of her 27 points scored in the fourth quarter, including a cold-blooded three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining (72-75), the French international tried everything to bring her team back. But it was Kitija Laksa who sent everyone to overtime with a 3-pointer in the money-time (75-75), taking advantage of poor Venetian defense positioning, which coach Andrea Mazzon acknowledged afterwards.

« It’s a terrible mistake on our part, from the staff. We didn’t clarify certain instructions. The girls have no responsibility, » he stated after the game.

In overtime, Schio was more composed and accurate, inflicting a fatal 11-4 run on a Venice team that had been generally convincing. With 45 points from the bench, dominance in the paint (36 rebounds vs 47) and a +10 lead in the third quarter (43-53), Reyer had reason to hope for better.

« We gave everything today. We need to quickly turn the page, stay united and focused to play in front of our fans, » said Lisa Berkani, clear-headed and combative despite the disappointment.

Game 3, scheduled for Thursday, May 8 at the Taliercio (8:30 PM), looms as a last chance for the Venetians to stay alive in this Scudetto final.
